Dear Gaila - Reading Preparation part III

This is the third column in the series of ideas and games for phonemic awareness. The first column discussed phonemic awareness of beginning sounds.The second column was about ending sounds.

Dear Gaila, My daughter will be learning to read next year in kindergarten. What exercises and games can I do in preparation? Sincerely, Excited Mother of an almost Kindergartener

Dear Excited Mother,

Last week we mentioned a few easy on the spot games for ending sounds. This week I want to share some card games ideas for ending sounds. These will need a bit more preparation.

The first is a domino game where the ending sound of one picture is the beginning sound of the next one:

Bed - Door Door - Red Red- Dog Goose - Sun

These games can often be found online, you can make them up, buy them in a teacher resource stores, or even in toy stores. This is a good place to find some materials.

Another game is a Lotto game. In the regular lotto game the child matches pictures to his bingo board of pictures. Here the child has to match the picture to a card with the same ending sound:

Door and Car; Red and Sad; Bike and Stick;

Regular Lotto games are also easily found on the internet and can be converted. It is also easy to create them by yourself. You can also print out a double set to create a memory game!

Have fun!
