Dear Gaila - Get a Non-Reader to Read

Dear Gaila,

I love the idea of the Readathon and how it helps my children improve their English. However, my third grader isn't too keen on reading. How can I encourage him to read more?

Mother of non-reader

Dear M.O.N.R.,

Firstly make sure that your child likes the level and genre of book he is reading. Help him choose books at the library or a friend's house, or download a book from Kindle.

Sometimes your child needs help getting started. Offer to sit and read the first couple of pages with him, or alternate for the first 10 pages. Before you know it he will be immersed in the story!

How about bribery? A shekel a book, a treat of a bag of dried fruit or nuts from the local health food store, or even a promise of special 'alone time' with a parent can do wonders.

Happy Reading!
